The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) dates back in its primitive form to the time of the apostles and early fathers of the church. The purpose of RCIA is to gradually initiate individuals into the faith and life of Christ and his Catholic Church.
As Christ taught all who came to him, so the Church teaches all who seek Christ. Thus, RCIA is for anyone, including those with little background in Christianity, Protestants, Catholics, and especially those who are seeking to join the Catholic Church.
